IM
Instant messaging would be another great tool to connect libraries with customers and allow quicker access to necessary materials. Instant messaging could also be a fun communication tool between library myself. I, personally am lazy to answer e-mails and would be more likely to respond to fast IMs. IM is different from the phone because it adds more flexibility to a waiting customer than calling. For example, a customer put on hold on the phone is limited on what to do while waiting. However, a person waiting for an IM reply can surf the internet for fun facts while waiting for the unique musical tone that signals an incoming IM. IM is also significantly different from e-mail. There is no spam and allowance to send messages while the other user is offline. However, my favorite aspect is that IM messages are true to their name and sent INSTANTLY. A fair amount of customers at the library use IM messaing at home or work. IM is one of the primary uses of communication for the younger crowd, replacing e-mail and phone calls. The working class find that a quick IM in the middle of a busy work day makes every ones day a little brighter.
